American Sign Language (ASL) courses offered by Blinn College will be provided online for the first time beginning this fall.

SGNL 1401 and 2301 will be offered this fall, with SGNL 1402 and 2302 joining the list of online offerings in the spring 2025 semester.

“They are being offered online to fit students’ flexibility with their schedules and to work at their own pace,” said Robyn Marcak, ASL Program Coordinator and ASL Professor. “It also helps out-of-state students enhance their skills and further their education with a four-year degree in interpreting for the deaf and as a counselor or teacher for the deaf.”

ASL is the dominant language of the deaf community in the United States, used by 250,000-500,000 people nationwide. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the 2023 median pay was $57,090.

Blinn’s Associate of Arts in Foreign Language – American Sign Language is available online and on the Bryan and Brenham campuses. This 60-credit hour associate degree program includes 14 hours of concentration in American Sign Language. Through the program, students gain understanding of deaf culture and American Sign Language grammatical structures in the United States. Students also learn to effectively utilize receptively and expressively skills in American Sign Language to communicate within the deaf community. The program focuses on communication through the study of deaf culture and ASL grammatical structures.

Program information is available at www.blinn.edu/american-sign-language.
