The Blinn College band, choir, and theatre arts programs are scheduling auditions and awarding scholarships for the 2021-22 academic year.

Blinn’s fall 2021 semester begins Monday, Aug. 30, and the music and theatre programs on the Brenham Campus have scholarships available.

The band is more than just an outlet for students to use their musical talents – it can also enhance the college experience and open doors to scholarships and four-year universities, said Dr. Sarah Burke, Director of Bands.

“During the past year, we had Blinn music students receive full-tuition scholarships to prestigious four-year universities in the state,” Burke said. “Blinn students are highly sought after as they move into a four-year setting to complete their music degrees. We have countless alumni teaching in the state, including several who had their programs in the state marching finals this past year, and musicians from Blinn have gone on to successful performing and directing careers.”

Blinn music students have an opportunity to work with outstanding faculty members, said Burke.

“Our faculty have advanced degrees from some of the most prestigious universities in the country,” she said.

Burke said music majors make up approximately 30% of the band. Majors and non-majors alike participate in the marching and concert bands. In an average year, 50-60 high schools are represented in the Buccaneer Band.

The Buccaneer Band performance schedule ranges from football game halftime shows to hosting the annual Marching Band Festival during the fall semester.

“Highlights from our past few years include several holiday concerts featuring our instrumental and vocal programs and a full recording session at Festival Hill in Round Top,” said Burke. “This world-class venue has been a wonderful addition to our performance calendar in addition to home concerts at the Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center.”

For Music Department students who want to stretch their vocal cords, the Blinn College Choir/Vocal Program also offers opportunities to perform. Scholarships are available, and auditions are held in the fall and spring semesters.

The program includes a chamber choir, concert choir, and women’s and men’s choruses. More information is available at

“We perform diverse and exciting music, allowing each singer the opportunity to improve their singing technique to move to a four-year program and perform on tour in the U.S. and abroad,” said Dr. Paulo Gomes, Choir Director.

Vocal students at Blinn College have transferred to renowned four-year universities, including Boston Conservatory at Berkley, the University of North Texas, and Hardin-Simmons University.

Advanced students have the opportunity to participate in weekly Master Classes and National Association of Teachers of Singing auditions and competitions, Gomes added.

Scholarship and performance opportunities also are available in the Theatre Arts Program, which cultivates a quality educational foundation of study, application, and experience through a wide range of performances, technical, and production studies.

Students do not need to be theatre arts majors to audition.

“Students have an opportunity to audition for a variety of performances related to drama and theatre,” said Brad Nies, Theatre Arts Program Director on the Blinn-Brenham Campus. “We always need people on and offstage, so we encourage all students to come out and show us what they can do. Just know that once you’ve been bitten by the ‘theatre bug,’ it’s hard not to consider changing your major to theatre.”

The 2021-22 Theatre Arts Season lineup has been announced, with a theme of “A Year of Unlikely Heroes.”

The lineup includes “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (Oct 7-10), “Slaphappy Improvisation Troupe (Oct. 28 and April 5-7), “Wiley and the Hairy Man (Nov. 18-21), “Golden Boy” (Feb. 17-20), and “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” (April 28-May 1).
