What is Health Information Technology?

"Health information technicians organize and manage health information data. They ensure that the information maintains its quality, accuracy, accessibility, and security in both paper files and electronic systems. They use various classification systems to code and categorize patient information for insurance reimbursement purposes, for databases and registries, and to maintain patients' medical and treatment histories." •2015 Average Pay: $37,110/year, $17.84 per hour

•Starting pay:

–Amounts coming from the HIT Advisory Committee

–Non-credentialed: $11-14

–Credentialed: $15 & up

•Higher pay in metropolitan areas/lower pay in rural areas

•Most facilities have good benefits (retirement, tuition reimbursement, vacation, etc.) which also should be considered

"Employment of health information technicians is projected to grow 15 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. The demand for health services is expected to increase as the population ages." 

How to begin

•Open enrollment

–Apply to Blinn

–Take any necessary TSIA

• Must be college ready in Reading, Writing, & Math before  taking certain courses

& before graduating

–Send any previous college transcripts to Blinn

–Fill out financial aid forms if needed

–Fill out online interest form (found on HIT webpage)

–Be advised by the director (in person, phone, or e-mail)

–Register for classes

•Must earn a "C" or better in all HITT/MDCA courses
