The new Blinn College – Schulenburg Student Government Association isn’t just about building camaraderie on campus – it plans to make a positive impact throughout Fayette County.
“We want to build a better sense of community on campus,” said Advisor William Allbritton, who teaches history and philosophy.
The Student Government Association (SGA) will assist in Blinn’s “If I Had a Hammer” program, which invites local fifth graders to build a one-room house while using math, physics and other skills they can apply in their daily lives.
The SGA will also work with the Boys & Girls Club of Champion Valley, including holding a fundraiser each month for the organization. SGA members will be selling Valentine’s Day candy this month, and members will attend the regional SGA conference held in Brenham Feb. 21-22.
Schulenburg’s SGA got its start in the Fall when it hosted a campus-wide social during final’s week. It then held a welcome back event for students at the beginning of the Spring semester.
The SGA recently appointed four officers: President Ashley Brugger, Vice President Zach Denny, Secretary Caitlyn Bennett, Historian Rachael Brown and Chaplin Lane Bunch. Freshman delegates include Abigail Seale, Ana Tello and Caitlyn Surman.
Blinn now has an active SGA on all four of its campuses.
“Once we get out there and make ourselves more known across campus, our hope is to see the club continue to grow,” Allbritton said.
