Blinn-Schulenburg's Garlick wins national dissertation award

Garlick's dissertation shares findings that an integrated reading/writing approach can help students transition into credit coursework more quickly

November 15, 2019

Becky GarlickDr. Becky Garlick, Executive Dean of the Blinn College-Schulenburg Campus, has received a prestigious national award.

Garlick’s dissertation on “Faculty Perceptions of the Implementation of Integrated Developmental Reading and Writing in a Texas Community College” was named 2019 Dissertation of the Year by the National Council on Student Development (NCSD).

NCSD gives the award annually to a doctoral dissertation that “excels in making a substantial contribution to the literature and/or practice of community college student development,” according to the organization.

Garlick’s dissertation was submitted to the NCSD for consideration by David V. Jones, Director of Advising, Transfer, and Career Services at the College of Southern Maryland. Jones was a fellow doctoral cohort member from Texas Tech University, where Garlick earned her doctoral degree.

Her dissertation focused on the experiences and perceptions of community college faculty who have taught an integrated reading and writing course.

“I am honored to have been nominated by David, who is my dear friend and Texas Tech University cohort member,” said Garlick. “I also am pleased that my research may assist other colleges in boosting their graduation, retention, or persistence rates.”

Among Garlick’s findings was that using an integrated reading/writing approach “can help students transition into credit coursework more quickly than using separate courses.”

Garlick oversees operations at the Blinn-Schulenburg Campus, which brings Blinn’s strong academic programs to small-town Texas, maintaining the comfortable environment and one-on-one attention desired by many students. For more information regarding Blinn-Schulenburg, visit
