Students will gain hands-on experience while emphasizing communication and collaboration

The Blinn College District Associate Degree Nursing, Emergency Medical Services, and Radiologic Technology programs will participate in a two-day, collaborative simulation exercise Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 21-22, at the RELLIS Campus in Bryan, Texas. The exercise will give students hands-on simulated emergency department experience while emphasizing communication and collaboration among initial responders, nursing staff, and other hospital departments.

This four-hour immersive experience will be repeated four times with different student groups over the two days.

Simulation exercises are a vital part of the student experience in Blinn’s Division of Health Sciences. Blinn’s 16,000-square-foot Simulation and Clinical Labs, located at the RELLIS Academic Complex on the RELLIS Campus, provides health science students with a first-class learning environment featuring the latest tools and technology. Through the Simulation and Clinical Labs, Blinn prepares future healthcare professionals to provide safe and compassionate patient care through hands-on activities in a controlled, simulated environment.

In Blinn’s simulation environment, students develop critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and clinical judgment skills as they acquire new knowledge. While simulation does not replace the need for students to learn in clinical practice, it complements other teaching and learning approaches and prepares students for their role in practice while providing a variety of simple to complex case scenarios in life-like, hands-on situations.

That commitment to active learning has made Blinn’s health science programs leaders in their fields. Blinn ADN graduates posted a 96.39 percent pass rate on the national licensure examination in 2018, surpassing the national average of 88.56 percent and the state average of 91.65 percent. All 35 members of Blinn’s Fall 2018 graduating class passed the NCLEX-RN, making it the seventh class to post a 100 percent pass rate.

Blinn’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Program is the regional leader in preparing students for careers as paramedics and emergency responders. Blinn students have a 100% pass rate on the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians certification exam and a 100% job placement rate, making Blinn EMS the clear choice for students seeking the highest caliber of instruction as they pursue their Emergency Medical Services Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree or their Paramedic Technology Level 2 Certificate.

Blinn’s Radiologic Technology Program also is recognized as a state leader in preparing students for the third-largest healthcare profession in the nation. Through the program, students can earn an AAS degree in radiologic technology and between 2014 and 2018 Blinn graduates have a 96% first-attempt pass rate on the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification examination and a 100% job placement rate.
