Blinn-Schulenburg Certified Medication Aide course begins Tuesday, Aug. 27

Course includes training in the preparation and administration of medications

The Blinn College-Schulenburg Campus will offer a certified medication aide course beginning Tuesday, Aug. 27, that prepares students to earn their state medication aide permit.

The 140-hour course instructs students in the preparation and administration of designated medications by non-licensed nursing personnel employed in licensed health care agencies.

The course includes specific training in the preparation and administration of medications, documentation, licensing standards, the safeguarding of medications, common drug reactions and side effects, and updated and new medications available on the market.

The Certified Medication Aide Program covers medical abbreviations, symbols, terminology, and common equivalents required for administration. Topics include drug legislation, drug references, basic anatomy and physiology, and common diseases. After completion of the course, students will be prepared to take the Texas Department of Human Services Medication Aide Licensure Exam.

The class will meet from 5:30-9:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from Aug. 27 to Jan. 16. Class will not meet on Nov. 28, Dec. 19, Dec. 24, Dec. 26, Dec. 31, or Jan. 2.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, certified medication aide jobs are expected to increase by 1,564,300positions (11 percent) between 2016 and 2026. Certified medication aides earn a median wage of $13.72 per hour.
