Blinn’s Hodde Center offers June courses in welding, machining, phlebotomy, and pharmacy tech

The Blinn College District’s A.W. Hodde, Jr. Technical Education Center will offer various courses this month in welding, machining, certified nurse aide, phlebotomy technician, pharmacy technician, and CPR and first aid.
In Introduction to Oxy-Fuel Welding and Cutting, students learn oxy-fuel welding and cutting, safety, setup and maintenance of oxy-fuel welding, and cutting equipment and supplies. The 128-hour course meets every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 3 - July 31, from 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Students can take the course for credit or enroll in the $942 non-credit course.
Advanced Pipe Welding covers advanced topics involving welding of pipe using the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process. Topics include electrode selection, equipment setup, and safe shop practices with an emphasis on weld positions 5G and 6G using various electrodes. The 128-hour course runs June 3-July 31 and meets Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 1-5:45 p.m. Students who enroll in the course receive college credit.
Advanced Gas Metal Arc Welding runs June 3-July 31 and covers advanced topics in gas metal arc welding and various welding positions. The 128-hour course meets Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 5-9:45 p.m. The course is offered for credit or costs $942 for non-credit students.
A $1,200 Basic Machine Shop course will be offered June 3-July 31. The 128-hour course introduces the students to machining fundamentals with an emphasis on shop safety, industrial hygiene, and preventative maintenance. The class meets on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 1:30-6:15 p.m.
Fundamentals of CNC Setup and Operations runs June 3-July 31 on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 8:25 a.m. to noon. The 96-hour course is $2,075 and introduces students to basic setup and operations of CNC machines. Students learn to set up fixtures, tool holders, and tooling, and to enter programs, make minor edits, and run programs using a Haas Control.
A $700 Certified Nurse Aide course will be held June 4 to July 18 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1- 5 p.m. The 80-hour course teaches the skills and abilities essential to providing basic care to residents of long-term care facilities. Topics include residents’ rights, communication, safety, observation, reporting, restorative services, mental health, social services needs, and assisting residents in maintaining basic comfort and safety with an emphasis on effective interaction with members of the health care team.
The Phlebotomy Technician course runs June 4 to July 17, followed by the Phlebotomy Technician pre-clinicals that are held July 18-31. The course and pre-clinicals are held Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The $550 course covers a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and standard precautions. Those include vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture, and specimen collection on adults, children, and infants with an emphasis on infection prevention, patient identification, specimen labeling, quality assurance, specimen handling, processing, accessioning, professionalism, ethics, and medical terminology. The pre-clinicals address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student.
The online Pharmacy Technician course will be offered June 4 through August 31 for $1,450. This course allows students to earn their Pharmacy Technician certificate through Blinn College regardless of their location. The program includes instruction in pharmacology, pharmacy law and regulations, sterile and non-sterile compounding, medication safety, quality assurance, medication order entry and fill processes, inventory management, billing, and information systems. Students who complete the program will be prepared to take the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam.
One-day, $115 CPR/First Aid/Red Cross courses will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 21, July 19, and August 16. The eight-hour course provides an introduction to basic first aid, CPR, and the use of automated external defibrillators,commonly referred to as AEDs. Students who successfully complete the course earn a Blinn College certificate.

The 12,000-square-foot Hodde Center was built in 2009 to provide local training for a quality, viable workforce in Washington and the surrounding communities. Business owners can enroll their employees in Hodde Center courses using Texas Workforce Commission Skills Development and Skills for Small Business funds, and Hodde Center staff can help businesses complete the request form. Blinn also offers students access to scholarships through the Blinn College Foundation, private grants, and Workforce Solutions.
