Blinn’s five-week Site Survey Layout Technician Program begins June 17

Program graduates are on the fast track to becoming Site Survey Layout Technicians

May 28, 2019

Site Survey LayoutRegistration is now open for the Blinn College District’s Site Survey Layout Technician Program, which begins Monday, June 17.

The program will be offered at The Texas A&M University System’s RELLIS Campus and is designed to meet the growing need for entry-level surveying technicians. The five-week program consists of two site survey layout courses that run concurrently. Students must enroll in both courses at the same time.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates earn the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-hour certification, the Texas Department of Transportation Flagger and Traffic Control Supervisor certifications, and the National Center for Construction Education and Research’s (NCCER) Site Layout I credential.

“Graduates emerge with the skills and credentials necessary to increase their employability and transition seamlessly into this rewarding field,” said Jay Anderson, Dean of Technical and Community Education Programs.

Students who complete the program will be trained as site survey layout technicians and have the basic knowledge to obtain entry-level positions in the land surveyor field. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, surveying technicians earn a median pay of $44,380 per year, or $21.34 per hour. The market expects to hire an additional 6,400 technicians between 2016 and 2026, an incredible 11 percent growth in the job market.

Surveying technicians visit sites to take measurements, collect data, make maps of the Earth’s surface, and assist land surveyors. The skills developed during the Site Survey Layout Technician Program serve as a foundation for technicians who may choose to continue their education and become land surveyors.

“Blinn College’s Site Survey Layout Technician Program offers valuable training that prepares individuals to not only be a qualified candidate for our industry but provides a foundation for them to build a career,” said Douglas Bramwell, P.E., RPLS, and Senior Vice President of Survey Practice with the engineering firm Jones and Carter. “In order to fill numerous entry-level positions at companies throughout Texas, the land surveying industry needs field technicians who can operate survey equipment to obtain field measurements and possess a basic knowledge of land surveying calculations.”

The Site Survey Layout Technician Program is divided into two $1,600 courses. The 96-hour first course runs June 17-July 2 and meets from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. This introduction gives students an overview of the surveying profession and reviews the history and mathematics used in surveying.

The 104-hour second course runs July 3-23 and meets from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. This portion of the program addresses surveying equipment, sketches, proper field note taking, methods of staking, layout of a building site, and establishing horizontal and vertical controls.

“This program gives students an opportunity to learn the theories and law behind site layout surveying so they may have a better understanding of the industry,” Instructor Justin Roberts said. “The training and certifications these individuals receive will allow them to become more marketable to employers and can lead to higher job placement.”

Instruction follows curriculum guidelines set forth by the NCCER. Students have access to approximately $60,000 worth of state-of-the-art equipment surveyors work with on a day-to-day basis in the field, including data collectors, GPS receivers, topographic stations, levels and level rods, and hardware tools.

This program was made possible with the support of Gessner Engineering, Jones and Carter, Hodde & Hodde Land Surveying, and Kimley-Horn.
