Fourteen Blinn College-Schulenburg Campus students recently completed Preserving Your Family Story III, a continuing education course designed to help family historians write, edit, and share their family stories.

Judy Balch (La Grange), Donna Bridwell (West Point), Verta Brown (La Grange), Marie Hayek (Columbus), Lemae Higgs (Swiss Alp), Rox Ann Johnson (Willow Springs), Linda Meuth (Giddings), Chris Morrison (Ellinger), Janetta Morris (La Grange), Gayle Newkirk (Bastrop), Terri Wagner (La Grange), Regena Williamson (Sheridan), Vicki Woodard (Schulenburg), and Denise Woodyard (La Grange) finished the eight-week program taught by local writer Elaine Thomas.

“I never thought of myself as a writer, but this class has made me realize that writing is a process as well as a talent,” Wagner said. “Through writing, revising, and rewriting my work, Elaine Thomas and my classmates have helped me develop a love for storytelling.”

Students in the course previously completed Preserving Your Family Story I and Preserving Your Story Family II, which guides students through steps such as goal setting, researching, organization, and production of their family stories with a strong emphasis on sharing weekly writing assignments orally. Preserving Your Family Story III is designed for participants to continue to write and polish their individual family stories and then share with the group.

Next year, the students will create an anthology of their best work in Preserving Your Family Story IV.
