Blinn College will host the state’s most talented young piano players at its 16th annual Young Pianist Competition at the Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Jan. 27.

“It is a good way to bring talented young pianists onto campus and get the word out that Blinn College has one of the state’s most highly regarded music departments,” said John Dujka, Instrumental Music Professor. “I want them to know that there is an opportunity for them to study piano here and that past competitors in the competition have studied at Blinn.”

The 8:30 a.m. event is open to the community and will feature 30 musicians from grade levels 5-12 competing for the chance to win cash prizes. Competitors will be divided into four age divisions and finalists will perform two memorized pieces of music of different styles.

“It is an opportunity for young artists to see how they stack up against other students their age from different parts of the state,” Dujka said. “The students that play at this event are playing at a level that is pre-collegiate. They all have the potential to go to college and study music.”

The finals will be held at 3 p.m. The overall winner will receive $300 and the runner-up will take away $200. Piano scholarships will be offered to select participants. Larry and Mary Whigham, Blinn’s 2015 People of the Year, donated prizes for the event.

“Larry and Mary Whigham are instrumental to our music program,” Dujka said. “They have donated two grand pianos to our department and have supported the arts at Blinn College in many ways.”

The guest judges for this year’s Pianist Competition are Timothy Hester and Dr. Tali Morgulis from the University of Houston and Dr. Ilonka Rus-Edery from Sam Houston State University.

Blinn College’s Music Department offers small classes, one-on-one attention, practical learning, and easily accessible faculty to that students are actively engaged in a superior learning environment. For more information, please
