Registration open for Blinn’s fourth annual Health Science Center Summer Camp

Camp introduces 7th and 8th graders to variety of health science career options

May 2, 2017

Health Science Center Summer CampLocal seventh and eighth graders will get the opportunity to combine science and technology through hands-on simulation during Blinn College’s fourth annual Health Science Center (HSC) Summer Camp.

The three-day camp will introduce participants to a wide variety of high-demand careers available in health sciences. Students and faculty from Blinn’s Associate Degree Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Emergency Medical Services, Fire Science, Physical Therapist Assistant, Radiologic Technology, Surgical Technology, and Veterinary Technology programs will demonstrate the basics of each profession, from the equipment they use to the techniques necessary to ensure quality, compassionate patient care.

“Our goal for the HSC Summer Camp is to give each participant some ideas about the career options healthcare has to offer,” said Sami Rahman, Director of Simulation and Clinical Labs. “It also allows Blinn students currently enrolled in these programs the opportunity to be mentors, showing and teaching what they have learned. It has really blossomed into such a nice experience.”

The camp will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 27-29 at the Health Science Center Campus in Bryan, a 26,000-square foot, state-of-the-art facility featuring the latest clinical simulation technology.

Participants will interact with a variety of hands-on activities during the camp, including blood pressure testing, x-ray imaging, first aid/CPR simulations, fire truck and working ambulance tours, and interacting with Blinn’s high-fidelity mannequins. On the final day, campers will work in teams to conduct an actual medical simulation and perform care with standardized patients as technicians of each profession.

Health Science Center Summer CampA new feature of this year’s camp includes the addition of Blinn’s Surgical Technology Program. Participants will hear from program students and faculty regarding the role of a surgical technologist – an integral part of a surgical care team, helping prep for and assist during surgery.

The cost of the camp is $50 per participant, which includes lunch and snacks each day.

Those interested will be asked to fill out an application and obtain a brief recommendation letter from their current science teacher. For more information and to register, email sami.rahman@blinn.edu.
