Blinn College’s Division of Technical & Community Education will offer a variety of course sections in Bryan this month, including Professional Truck Driver I and II, Phlebotomy Technician, Certified Nurse Aide, and Pharmacy Technician.

Blinn’s technical and community education courses are designed to provide students the knowledge and ability they need to enter the workforce immediately after completion of the courses. Many of these courses do not require a high school diploma and enrollment is fast and easy. As most of these courses are non-credit, students do not need to go through the College’s admission process to enroll. Programs vary in length and are offered with daytime, evening, and weekend options.

In addition to the courses scheduled for May, Blinn recently announced a $195,000 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission to establish new plumbing and carpentry programs at the RELLIS Campus in Bryan beginning in June. These programs are designed following nationally recognized National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum, and demand for both programs is growing locally and across the nation.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national demand for plumbers is expected to grow 12 percent between 2014 and 2024, generating 49,100 additional jobs with a median pay of $50,620 per year. Workforce Solutions Brazos Valley anticipates 17 percent growth locally during that same span, with an hourly salary range between $12.17 and $21.27.

The national demand for carpenters is expected to grow 6 percent between 2014 and 2024, generating 60,400 jobs nation-wide with a median pay of $42,090 per year. Workforce Solutions Brazos Valley anticipates 14.5 percent growth locally during that same span, with an hourly wage between $11.65 and $18.

Small business owners can enroll their employees in Blinn Technical & Community Education courses for free using Texas Workforce Commission Skills for Small Business Funds, and Blinn staff can help businesses complete the request form. Blinn also offers students access to scholarships through the Blinn College Foundation, private grants, and Workforce Solutions.

For more information or to register for these courses, visit the Blinn Post Office Campus at 301 Post Office Street in Bryan. For additional information, visit www.blinn.edu/workforce or call 979-209-7205.
