Blinn-Schulenburg opens new certified nurse aide course section in June

Demand for certified nurse aides expected to grow 26 percent across Texas

May 3, 2017

The Blinn College – Schulenburg Campus will offer training this summer that prepares students for high-demand careers as certified nurse aides (CNA).

The CNA course begins Tuesday, June 6, and will run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Registered nurse Linda Rabel will teach the $700 course, and partial scholarships will be available to all students. A $300 clinical portion will immediately follow the lecture course and should be completed by Aug. 1.

Certified nurse aides provide basic patient care under the direction of nursing staff, including feeding, bathing, grooming, changing linens and transporting patients. Nurse aides often are employed in nursing care facilities, where they frequently serve as principal caregivers.

“There are more than 20 long-term care facilities within a 35-minute drive of Schulenburg,” said Loraine Orellana, Distance Education Coordinator. “There are currently several help-wanted ads in the area papers, and starting pay for CNAs is above minimum wage.”

CNA jobs are expected to grow 21 percent nationally and 26 percent throughout Texas between 2012 and 2022, with 3,680 projected job openings each year. The average wage for a CNA in Texas is $10.75 per hour.

Advance registration is required. Prospective students should call Loraine Orellana at 979-743-5237 during business hours for more information or to register.
