Blinn College to celebrate 802 graduates at Fall graduation
Total includes 458 reverse transfers
December 8, 2017
Blinn College will celebrate 802 graduates during the College’s 138th commencement ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, at the Bryan Performing Arts Center.
Blinn will recognize 458 reverse transfer graduates for the Fall semester. Reverse transferring allows students who completed Blinn’s residency requirements before transferring to a four-year university to apply credits they earned at the university toward their associate degree. To check eligibility, Blinn alumni should contact their four-year institution and request that their transcript be sent to Blinn, then visit Blinn’s graduation website to complete the reverse transfer graduation application.
The commencement ceremony will feature two student speakers – Rebecca Mwarabu-Johnson, who will graduate from the Legal Assistants Program, and sophomore Ashley Frei, who will graduate from the Associate Degree Nursing Program.
A Brooklyn native, Mwarabu-Johnson is an assistant property manager, mother, and wife who graduated from College Station High School in 2015. Based upon the recommendation of a high school teacher, she enrolled in Blinn’s Legal Assistants Program in 2016.
After graduation, she plans to continue her legal education at Sam Houston State University, and intends to earn her law degree from South Texas College of Law. Her goal is to spend the majority of her career as a public defender and to one day own her own law firm.
“We hear the horror stories all the time about people who had a public defender who was overwhelmed with a million other cases and so they ended up pleading guilty for crimes they may not have committed,” Mwarabu-Johnson said. “My goal is to become a public defender so each defendant can get the time from their attorney that they deserve.”
Frei, a graduate of Milano High School, earned her first associate degree in theatre and film and earned a scholarship to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. After serving as missionaries in the Philippines, Frei, her husband, and three children returned to the United States in 2013 so Frei could earn her nursing degree.
Frei plans to begin a registered nurse internship in the emergency department of a local hospital, where she can apply her training in a fast-paced environment. Her long-term goals are to complete her nurse practitioner license and become a certified midwife.
“My heart’s cry is to help others above myself and love them no matter where they come from or what they have done,” Frei said.
Registration for Blinn’s Winter Minimester is open through Thursday, Dec. 14, and registration for the Spring semester is available through Monday, Jan. 15. College officials encourage early registration for convenient scheduling and placement in high-demand courses.
Blinn has articulation agreements with 39 four-year institutions, and its academic transfer rate regularly ranks among the highest in the state and the nation. According to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Blinn’s academic transfer rate of 34.2 percent ranks second in the state and far exceeds the statewide average of 21.1 percent.
According to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s CollegeForAllTexans.com, Blinn students who take 30 credit hours during the 2017-18 academic year will save $3,717, or 42 percent, compared to state residents at the average Texas public university.
In addition to Blinn’s low tuition and fees, the Blinn Foundation offers more than 200 endowed scholarships available to incoming and returning students from a wide range of backgrounds, majors, and experiences. Blinn students and prospective students also can register for external scholarships and participate in grant programs.
