Blinn College, TEEX add carpentry and plumbing night courses to slate of workforce course offerings
Courses will feature nationally recognized curricula and be offered at the RELLIS Campus

Blinn College and the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) have added night courses in carpentry and plumbing to the slate of workforce training courses available at The Texas A&M University System’s RELLIS Campus in Bryan.
The first plumbing night course section will begin Wednesday, January 10th, with classes meeting Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The carpentry night course will begin Tuesday, January 9th, and will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Blinn’s 19-week plumbing and 20-week carpentry programs consist of eight contact hours per week, and do not require previous experience to succeed in the course. Scholarships are available to assist with program costs.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national demand for plumbers is expected to grow 16 percent between 2016 and 2026, generating 75,800 additional jobs with a median pay of $51,450 per year. Workforce Solutions Brazos Valley anticipates 25 percent growth locally during that same span, with an hourly wage between $12.01 and $36.23.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national demand for carpenters is expected to grow 8 percent between 2016 and 2026, generating 87,000 jobs nation-wide with a median pay of $43,600 per year. Workforce Solutions Brazos Valley anticipates 23 percent growth locally during that same time span, with an hourly salary range between $8.62 and $23.79.
Blinn’s Plumbing and Carpentry programs are designed to follow the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum. This nationally recognized curriculum was developed with the cooperation of more than 125 construction CEOs, trade association officials, and academic leaders. Students who complete these courses earn the NCCER certification, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) 10-hour card, and certificates from both Blinn College and TEEX.
The Carpentry Program includes 200 contact hours of skills training and assessments covering basic safety; construction math; basic rigging; building materials, fasteners, and adhesives; hand and power tools; construction drawings, specifications, and layout; floor systems; wall systems; ceiling and roof framing; building envelope systems; basic stair layout.
The Plumbing Program includes 200 contact hours of skills training and assessments covering basic safety; construction math, hand tools, power tools, construction drawings, basic rigging; introductory plumbing; plumbing tools; plumbing math; plumbing drawings; plastic pipe and fittings; copper tube and fittings; cast iron pipe and fittings; steel pipe and fittings; plumbing fixtures; drain, waste, and vent systems; and water distribution systems.
Both programs include a 10-hour construction training course covering OSHA Standards, policies, and procedures in the construction industry. Topics include scope and application of the standards, construction safety and health principles, and special emphasis on those areas in construction which are most hazardous.
Students who are 18 years of age or older, eligible to work in the United States, and registered with the Selective Service (if male) are qualified for a scholarship that reduces the cost of the Carpentry course to $975, and the Plumbing course to $900.
