The Blinn College-Schulenburg Campus will host a book discussion and signing with author Annette McGivney Monday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. in Room 120 in Liberal Arts Building.

The event is free and open to the public.

McGivney, an award-winning journalist and longtime Southwest Editor for Backpacker Magazine, will discuss her new book “Pure Land,” a true story of three lives, three cultures, and the search for Heaven on Earth, published in October 2017.

“We have a wonderful group of students at our campus who are very interested in writing, so this gives them an opportunity to learn more from an experienced, award-winning author who has published a book,” said Becky Garlick, Executive Dean, Blinn-Schulenburg Campus. “We think it will be a great motivation for our students as well as anyone else in the community who is interested in writing.”

“Pure Land” is centered around Tomomi Hanamure, a Japanese citizen who loved exploring the wilderness of the American West. Hanamure was killed on her birthday May 8, 2006, as she hiked to Havasu Falls on the Havasupai Indian Reservation at the bottom of Grand Canyon. “Pure Land” is the story of this tragedy, but also the story of how McGivney’s quest to understand Hanamure’s life and death wound up guiding the author through her own life-threatening crisis.

Following the presentation, Sherry Murphy from the Family Crisis Center will give an overview of the organization before the book signing and refreshment portion of the event. Signed copies of McGivney’s book will be available and a portion of sale proceeds will go to the Family Crisis Center, which serves Fayette, Lee and Colorado counties.

The event includes a discussion led by McGivney on writing techniques and tips, plus other book-related topics. Fayette County author Elaine Thomas, who teaches Blinn College’s Preserving Your Family Story courses, will close out the event.

Blinn-Schulenburg offers a variety of academic transfer, workforce training, and continuing education classes to fit the needs of any student. For information, call 979-627-7997.
