Blinn College production of ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’ draws sellout crowds
Blinn-Bryan theatre season continues with Thornton Wilder one-act plays Nov. 30-Dec. 2

The Blinn College-Bryan Campus Theatre Arts Program kicked off its 2017-18 season with four consecutive sellout performances of “Picnic at Hanging Rock.”
Audiences visited the Blinn College-Bryan Campus theatre for three consecutive evening performances followed by a Sunday afternoon matinee.
“This has been such a positive experience,” Theatre Director Greg Wise said. “Our students really challenged our audience, and offered a presentation that was very unique to this community.”
Making its U.S. premiere on the Blinn-Bryan stage, “Picnic at Hanging Rock” featured the talents of Blinn theatre students Judith Igwilo, Cherilyn Kubicek, Lizzy Lovejoy, Chelsea Mansker, and Kelsey Marquis, who each mastered the challenge of playing multiple characters throughout the performance.
“These five student performers did an outstanding job transforming into a wide range of personalities for this Australian drama,” Wise said. “Additionally, each actress mastered the skill of speaking in different dialects, including Australian, British, and French, making their performance even more impressive.”
After viewing the production, representatives from Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin State universities’ theatre departments nominated Kubicek, Lovejoy, and Marquis for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship for their excellence in dialect work. Stage Manager Alexander Martin also was nominated for the scholarship for his excellence in stage management.
“It is nice to see our students recognized for their hard work,” Wise said. “Not only were they able to receive constructive criticism from university theatre faculty, but they now have a chance to compete for a national scholarship.”
The Blinn-Bryan Theatre Arts Program will continue its season of “A World Through Time” with Thornton Wilder’s two one-act plays – “The Happy Journey to Trenton and Camden” and “The Long Christmas Dinner” – at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 30-Dec. 2, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, in the Bryan Campus Student Center Theatre (map).
Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for the general public. Seating is first-come,
