Blinn College faculty are long accustomed to tearing down the walls that separate students from their goals, but earlier this month they partnered with Bryan/College Station Habitat for Humanity to build much-needed walls for a local family.

As part of Habitat for Humanity’s Circle of Women build, eight Blinn College faculty participated in a wall-raising ceremony for the Brown family, a single-grandparent family with three children.

Blinn faculty and staff representing the College’s Agricultural and Natural Sciences; Mathematics, Business, Engineering, and Technology; Humanities; Social Sciences, and Health Sciences divisions and the Learning Center have raised more than $1,800 toward the construction of the Brown family’s new home. This marks the fourth year Blinn faculty and staff have partnered with the Circle of Women.

“I absolutely love working with Habitat for Humanity,” Biology Professor Amanda Chau said. “Not only do you learn new skills and get to watch the progression of the build, but it’s a great bonding event, and it’s all for a great cause.”

In addition to erecting the frames, Blinn faculty and staff are scheduled for upcoming workdays that include siding installation and exterior and interior painting. In the past, Blinn student organizations have also volunteered at Habitat for Humanity builds, and Chau said Blinn faculty look forward to expanding the involvement of students and employees for future builds.

The Circle of Women works with Bryan/College Station Habitat for Humanity to help eliminate substandard housing in Bryan and College Station. Each year, these women empower themselves and recruit other women to raise the necessary funds to sponsor a home for a woman looking to purchase a home through Bryan/College Station Habitat for Humanity. Additionally, they provide a Women’s Construction Workshop prior to the wall raising of their sponsored home to educate local women on construction basics and home repair. The Brown family’s home will be the Circle’s 11th home sponsorship with Bryan/College Station Habitat for Humanity.
