Blinn College-Brenham Theatre brings ‘Hansel and Gretel’ to life
The classic children’s tale with a humorous twist comes to the O’Donnell Center, Nov. 16-19
November 8, 2017
The Blinn College-Brenham Campus Theatre Arts Program will present “Hansel and Gretel” at the Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center Nov. 16-19.
The third play featured in the Season of Dark Tales, “Hansel and Gretel” by Michele L. Vacca is a classic children’s tale with a humorous twist.
The play tells the story of two children, Hansel and Gretel, who are sent into the woods by their stepmother. The tired and hungry children discover a large cottage built of gingerbread, cakes, and delicious candies, but are unaware that it is owned by a witch known for turning children into gingerbread.
“‘Hansel and Gretel’ is one of the scariest fairy tales, so this play fits into this season’s theme,” said Brad Nies, Theatre Director. “This version is going to be great for kids with witches that are very funny and not meant to be taken seriously.”
Unlike the original “Hansel and Gretel,” which features one witch, this version of the play features three witches who work together to capture the children.
“These two additional cartoonish characters mirror Hansel and Gretel and help the audience appreciate the play more,” said freshman Jaci Weidemann, stage manager. “The audience will enjoy the cartoonish elements and special effects in the play that make it stand out.”
Zachary Hopkins, who plays Hansel, has developed his character with a children’s audience in mind.
“Everyone will enjoy the visuals and how the characters are so well developed that they will forget they are in a theatre watching a play,” Hopkins said. “Everyone will feel like they are in the woods with Hansel and Gretel, and I think the kids are going to enjoy it the most.”
“Hansel and Gretel” will open at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 16-18, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 19, in the O’Donnell Center.
The play will be directed by Brad Nies. Kevin Patrick serves as technical director, and Jennifer Patrick is the costume designer.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, children, and senior citizens. Blinn students, faculty, and staff receive free tickets with the code “staffcomp.”
