Blinn vocational nursing programs to host information sessions
Blinn’s Brenham, Bryan campuses each offer face-to-face and online information sessions
September 21, 2017
The vocational nursing programs on Blinn College’s Brenham and Bryan campuses invite prospective students to face-to-face and online information sessions that can lead students to high-demand careers in the healthcare industry.
The online information session is available through Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018, at www.blinn.edu/vocational-nursing/brenham/information.html. Participants should allow themselves approximately one hour to complete the online session, which includes the same information as the face-to-face sessions. Applicants must score a 75 percent or higher on the quiz at the end of the online information session and submit a certificate of completion to begin the application process.
The Brenham Campus Vocational Nursing Program will host its face-to-face information sessions at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5; Thursday, Nov. 2; and Thursday, Dec. 7, in Room 205 of the Arts & Sciences Building on the Brenham Campus (map).
The Bryan Campus Vocational Nursing Program will host its face-to-face sessions at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5; Thursday, Nov. 2; and Thursday, Dec. 7, in Room 3510 of the Health Science Center Clinical Building I located at 8441 State Highway 47 in Bryan.
Blinn’s vocational nursing programs provide students the education and training needed to become highly skilled, licensed vocational nurses capable of working in a variety of medical settings. The 10-month programs include courses in disease control and prevention, anatomy and physiology, basic nursing skills, nutrition, pharmacology, pediatrics, neonatal and surgical nursing, and mental health and mental illness.
Students spend approximately 40 hours per week in classroom and clinical settings and attendance is mandatory. Class begins at 6:30 a.m. three times per week. Because students devote a great deal of time to studying and preparing for class and clinicals, faculty recommend that students limit their work hours.
“Nursing school is a very challenging experience,” said Michelle Marburger, Brenham Campus Program Director. “However, becoming a nurse is one of the most rewarding careers a person can have.”
Graduates who pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) are qualified to work in a variety of settings, including home health, dialysis, hospitals, clinics and physicians’ offices. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for vocational nurses is expected to grow 16 percent between 2014 and 2024, resulting in 117,300 additional positions. In 2016, the median pay for a Texas vocational nurse was $44,090 per year.
Earlier this year, PracticalNursing.org ranked the Blinn-Brenham Vocational Nursing Program 11th and the Blinn-Bryan Vocational Nursing Program 16th out of 95 vocational nursing programs in the state of Texas. The rankings were based upon each school’s NCLEX rates over the past five years, with extra weight placed upon the most recent exams.
“The vocational nursing faculty strives for student success,” said Tammye Anderson, Bryan Campus Program Director. “Our program is very intense and the students are in class or clinical for 8-9 hours per day, Monday through Friday. Through tough love, our students graduate confident and prepared to begin a career in nursing.”
Vocational nursing is part of Blinn’s Division of Health Sciences, which offers associate degree nursing, dental hygiene, emergency medical services, fire science, health information technology, physical therapist assistant, radiologic technology, surgical technology, and therapeutics manufacturing programs designed to train students for high-demand professions.
