Blinn College welcomes students for start of the Fall semester

Campus life is back in full swing with the arrival of students

Blinn College students participate in life-sized board games, including Connect Four and chess, at the Blinn-Brenham Campus Student Center as part of the College’s welcome week activities.

Blinn College welcomed students with open arms this week as classes and campus activities provided a sense of normalcy in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

“The hurricane affected campus life, but Blinn improvised at the Student Center and with activities at our halls,” said sophomore Travis Gibson, who moved into his campus residence hall last week. “I stayed on campus the whole time because the weather was way too bad to go do anything, but it was nice making new friends during the movie nights and ping pong tournaments.”

Sophomore Corissa Richardson arrived at Blinn last week from Houston.

“My house isn’t flooded, but the area is, so I have stayed in contact with my family to make sure that everyone is safe,” Richardson said. “I got here right before the rain started and stayed busy with the fun activities Blinn had.”

Blinn-Brenham’s on-campus living facilities make it unique to most junior colleges. Blinn-Brenham offers more student housing than any other Texas community college, with 1,315 beds on campus. For sophomore theatre arts student Isaiah Edwards, the opportunity to live on campus was a big factor in choosing Blinn.

“Housing at Blinn really helps students prepare for university life and provides a stepping stone,” Edwards said.

Inspired by his experience as a freshman, Edwards is a resident assistant this year at Atkinson Hall.

“My goal is to make an impact on new students so they can be successful here and achieve their goals,” Edwards said. “I’ve had great experiences over the past year and that will help me mold others.”

Freshman Alex Duffy moved to Brenham from Frisco to participate in the Texas A&M Engineering Academy at Blinn-Brenham, a unique program that gives talented students an opportunity to pursue their engineering degree while co-enrolled at Texas A&M and Blinn College. Texas A&M Engineering Academy at Blinn-Brenham students reside in the Blinn College Park Apartments on campus, and take their first-year math, science, and engineering courses together. Texas A&M engineering courses are taught by Texas A&M faculty on the Brenham Campus.

“Moving in has been really exciting because you get the whole experience and everyone is moving in at the same time,” Duffy said. “Blinn seemed like the obvious choice from the start, and the more I looked into the Engineering Academy, I knew it was perfect.”

For sophomore Sarina Fedelin, it has been the sense of community and the people she has met on campus that she has enjoyed the most.

“I have met some really fun, outgoing people that I have connected with,” she said.

Fedelin has already immersed herself into campus life, joining the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society as a freshman. Now an officer in PTK, she arrived back on campus last week and is looking to earn her degree from Blinn in science and transfer into a clinical psychology program.

“I chose Blinn because so many of its classes are accepted as transfer credits at Texas A&M,” she said.

For Trajan Bush, athletics played a big role in his college decision. Bush is redshirting in football this season, and plans to try out for the baseball team. He plans on majoring in business management and minoring in kinesiology.

“I am looking forward to meeting my roommates and seeing more of the campus,” he said. “I am four hours away from home, so this is something new.”

Freshman baseball player Jacob Millender arrived on campus for the first time last week.

“Blinn was definitely my number one,” he said. “Out of all the other junior colleges I visited, Blinn was the route I wanted to take academically.”
