August 11, 2017
Blinn College Alumni & Friends Association Treasurer Janice Kramer, Director Patrick Gilbert, and members Ross Schroeder and Dayna Schroeder were among the Alumni & Friends Association volunteers who partnered with the Texas Ramp Project Saturday, Aug. 5, to build wheelchair ramps for those in need.
Eight volunteers from the Association collaborated to build wheelchair ramps for those with limited mobility at no expense to the individual.
“The Alumni & Friends Association has made community a greater part of its mission for the 2017-2018 year, and the Texas Ramp Project is a perfect avenue for our members to have a tremendous impact on people’s lives,” said Dr. Kyle Merten, Alumni Relations Director.
The Texas Ramp Project is a state-wide initiative that has built 13,173 wheelchair ramps since 1985. Altogether, volunteers have dedicated 395,370 hours to constructing more than 65 miles of ramps.
“The Alumni & Friends Association was excited to assist such a worthy cause,” Merten said.
The volunteers worked on three projects, building two ramps on-site and building modules, the foundation structure of the ramp, at an off-site location.
“Community service projects like these are great bonding experiences for our members, and provide a new avenue for Blinn College and its alumni to continue making a difference in our community,” Merten said.
Blinn’s Alumni & Friends Association maintains contact with former students; encourages support for and participation in the College’s educational, cultural, athletic and social programs; encourages student recruitment; and assists the College in achieving its goals and objectives.
