Four Blinn College graduates awarded prestigious Terry Foundation Scholarship

Scholarships are awarded in recognition of leadership, character and scholastic ability

September 14, 2016

Four recent Blinn College graduates were awarded the Terry Foundation Scholarship in recognition of their leadership, character and scholastic ability.

William Ferguson (Bellville), Juan Pablo Gomez (Katy), Karley Kasmiersky (Fayetteville) and Ashley Langston (Manvel) each were awarded scholarships worth a minimum of $13,000 for the 2016-17 academic year. Ferguson and Gomez each attended the Blinn-Bryan campus, and Kasmiersky and Langston enrolled at the Blinn-Brenham campus.

The Terry Transfer Scholarship is awarded to non-traditional students who are transferring from a Texas community college or university and are working toward their first baccalaureate degree. Scholars are selected based on three criteria: leadership potential and character, scholastic record and ability, and financial need. Each of these criteria is weighed equally and independently.

Blinn ranks among the state leaders in transferring students to top four-year universities. Blinn’s academic transfer rate of 39.5 percent ranks second in the state.

“More than 1,500 students apply for these scholarships and the Terry Foundation interviews nearly 500,” said Ashley Hermes, engineering programs director. “I am proud that four Blinn students were among the 167 selected for this prestigious award.”

Ferguson, a business major, is now attending the University of Texas at Austin. Gomez, now at Texas A&M University, earned his Associate of Science in business at Blinn with a 4.0 grade point average (GPA), and Kasmiersky is an early education major now enrolled at Sam Houston State University. Langston graduated with her Associate of Arts degree in liberal arts and was named to the Don Wilhelm Athletic Director’s Honor Roll as a member of the Blinn softball team. Langston now attends Texas A&M.

The Terry Foundation’s mission is to improve and develop the state of Texas by assisting Texas students to attend the state’s finest public universities. To achieve this goal, the Terry Foundation awards scholarships to meet the high standards set by its founders.
