Blinn-Schulenburg to offer health, computer and language courses this Fall

The Blinn College – Schulenburg campus has released its Fall workforce and community education course schedule, complete with courses in computers, healthcare, watercolor painting, photography and languages.

Blinn is the first college in the state to offer a customer service course, which helps students improve their digital, written and conversational skills to meet the needs of today’s employers. The course includes job search assistance. Classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 6, and run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8:30 p.m.

Blinn’s basic computer series begins Wednesday, Sept. 7. The free course covers basic computer functions, provides an introduction to the Microsoft Office Suite, and provides resume writing and online job search tips. The free course meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6-8:30 p.m.

The non-credit Painting Watercolor Flowers course is set to begin on Thursday, Sept. 8. The eight-hour, $79 course will be held Thursdays at 6 p.m. Taught by local artist Terry Ehler, the course teaches students the basic strokes of watercolor painting, brush techniques, paper options and color recipes. Painting Watercolor II also will be taught by Ehler and begins Thursday, Oct. 20. The $79 class will also be held Thursdays at 6 p.m.

Students interested in photography are invited to attend a Monday, Sept. 12, orientation session for Blinn’s Fall Adobe Photoshop online course. The 10-week course costs $129.

Advanced Conversational Czech will begin Wednesday, Sept. 14. This $79, 18-hour course will be held from 7-9 p.m. each Wednesday. The course teaches students about Czech heritage and to read the Czech language.

Conversational Spanish I teaches students the basics in speaking Spanish, including pronunciation, numbers, letters, phrases and greetings. The $79 course begins Monday, Sept. 19, and runs 6-8 p.m. on Mondays.

Blinn also offers a free ongoing English as a Second Language (ESL) course in cooperation with Community Action on Wednesdays from 5:30-8 p.m. in Room 121.

A new online pharmacy technician course will begin Monday, Sept. 26. The 160-hour, $1,450 course teaches students to work closely with pharmacists in providing medication and healthcare products to patients. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of pharmacy technicians is expected to grow 27 percent in Texas between 2012 and 2022. Pharmacy technicians average a median wage of $14.90 per hour, or $31,000 per year, statewide.

Students who want to plan, research, organize, write and produce a compelling collection of family memories can take Preserving Your Family Story – Or Your Own, which begins Wednesday, Oct. 5. The 16-hour, $79 course runs on Wednesdays at 2 p.m.

A one-day, $75 medication aide refresher course takes place from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, and includes specific training and review in the preparation and administration of medications, documentation, licensing standards, the safeguarding of medications, common drug reactions and side effects, and updated and new medications available on the market. Students who successfully complete the course receive an updated medication aide permit from the state.
