Blinn faculty and staff raise more than $5,000 for Habitat for Humanity

Blinn professors participate in wall-raising ceremony benefiting Bryan family

October 3, 2016

Blinn College faculty are long accustomed to tearing down the walls that separate students from their goals.

On Saturday, they partnered with Bryan/College Station Habitat for Humanity to build new walls. As part of Habitat for Humanity’s Circle of Women Program, eight Blinn College faculty participated in a wall-raising ceremony for the Rojo family, a single-mother family with children aged 13, 8, and 6.

Blinn’s Humanities; Visual/Performing Arts & Kinesiology; Agricultural & Natural Sciences; and Mathematics, Business, Engineering & Technology divisions each raised more than $1,000 toward the project, and other Blinn divisions and departments donated an additional $1,300. This marks the third year Blinn faculty and staff have partnered with Circle of Women Habitat for Humanity.

“I absolutely love working with Habitat for Humanity,” said Biology Professor Amanda Chau. “Not only do you learn new skills and get to watch the progression of the build, but it’s a great bonding event and it’s all for a great cause.”

In addition to erecting the frames on Saturday, Blinn faculty and staff are scheduled for upcoming workdays that include painting and landscaping. Blinn student organizations have also volunteered at Habitat for Humanity builds, and Chau said Blinn faculty look forward to expanding the involvement of student organizations for a Spring build.

Circle of Women works with Bryan/College Station Habitat for Humanity to help eliminate substandard housing in Bryan and College Station. Each year, these women empower themselves and recruit other women to raise the necessary funds to sponsor a home for a woman looking to purchase a home through Bryan/College Station Habitat for Humanity. Additionally, they provide a Women’s Construction Workshop prior to the wall raising of their sponsored home to educate local women on construction basics and home repair. The Rojo family’s home will be the Circle’s 10th home sponsorship with Bryan/College Station Habitat for Humanity.
