dental hygiene studentBlinn College invites prospective students considering a career as a dental hygienist to attend one of two upcoming information sessions regarding the College’s Dental Hygiene Program.

The two-year Dental Hygiene Program prepares students for careers as dental hygienists or transfer into a bachelor’s degree program at a four-year university. Based at the Post Office Campus, the program is equipped with a dental hygiene clinic and highly-qualified faculty who closely work with students in classroom and clinical settings.

Information sessions will be held Friday, June 24, at 1 p.m. and Tuesday, July 26, at 6 p.m. in Room CC-6 of the Post Office campus located at 301 Post Office St. in Bryan. All program applicants must attend an information session, which will inform prospective students of the program’s admissions criteria, application process, and the role of a registered dental hygienist.

Blinn’s Dental Hygiene Program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Upon successful completion of coursework, students receive an Associate of Applied Science degree and are eligible to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and a regional or state board clinical exam. After graduating from the program, students can earn more than $30 an hour as dental hygienists.

Each year the program participates in a variety of community service projects, including Give Kids a Smile, an initiative of the American Dental Association that provides free dental services to qualifying local children. At the most recent Give Kids a Smile event, more than 60 children received cleanings, x-rays, and sealants at no cost, totaling $14,336 in preventative care. Since the inaugural event in 2009, Give Kids a Smile has provided more than $150,000 in preventative dental services.

The Dental Hygiene Program is part of Blinn’s Division of Health Sciences, which offers associate degree nursing, dental hygiene, emergency medical services, physical therapist assistant, radiologic technology, fire science, veterinary technology and vocational nursing programs designed to train students for high-demand professions.
