Two-part course includes classroom and clinical portions

August 3, 2016

Blinn College – Schulenburg is offering students a first step toward a high-demand medical career with its Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) course beginning this fall.

The course, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 13, includes on-campus classroom hours and clinical portions that take place at a local long-term care facility. The classroom portion is 80 hours and the clinical portion will be 40 hours. The course meets on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and will be taught by Linda Rabel, a registered nurse. The course costs $550 for the classroom portion and $250 for the clinical portion.

Blinn’s CNA Program offers an opportunity for hands-on care and the performance of routine tasks under the supervision of nursing and medical staff. Students learn basic caregiving skills, infection control, communication techniques and safety procedures. Upon completion of all course elements, students take the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services Exam. Nurse aides are often employed in nursing care facilities, where they frequently serve as principal caregivers.

Students interested in the CNA course should contact Loraine Orellana at 979-743-5237 to schedule a brief orientation and receive registration information.

“Our students traditionally do very well on the state exam,” Orellana said.
