Blinn psychology honor society, student earn national recognition

Blinn’s Psi Beta chapter one of 14 nationwide to achieve Chapter Excellence

August 11, 2016

Blinn College’s chapter of the national community college psychology honor society was one of just 14 chapters nationwide to achieve chapter excellence, the College announced today.

Psi Beta, a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and an affiliate of the American Psychological Association, also awarded Blinn Psi Beta student Lindi J. Lawson fourth place in its national student research paper competition for her paper, “Grit, social media, and academic achievement within the community college sample.”

Lawson’s paper won one of four inaugural Anne Anastasi Research Scholarships. She will receive a certificate and a check for $2,250 at the American Psychological Association’s annual conference to be held in Denver this month.

Blinn’s Psi Beta chapter was selected in recognition of its representation of the main goals of Psi Beta – scholarship, research, leadership and service. Blinn’s Psi Beta chapter participates in a variety of service activities on campus and in the community, regularly invites guest speakers to campus, and participated in last year’s national Psi Beta research project regarding the relationship between academic self-regulation, student success and happiness.

Blinn has hosted a Psi Beta chapter since 1995. Social Sciences Department Head and Professor Dr. Katherine Wickes, a Past-President of the Psi Beta national organization’s board of directors, serves as chapter advisor.

Psi Beta’s mission is the professional development of psychology students at community colleges through promotion and recognition of excellence in scholarship, leadership, research and community service.

Psi Beta is one of 46 student organizations active on the Blinn-Bryan campus. Students interested in participating in Psi Beta or the Psychology Club can contact Wickes at katherine.wickes@blinn.edu.
