Blinn-Brenham nursing graduates achieve 100 percent pass rate on national licensure exam

Last year, Blinn was one of just 13 programs statewide to reach perfection

September 8, 2016

For the fifth time in the past six years, every Blinn College-Brenham campus vocational nursing graduate has passed the national licensure exam on the first try.

All 24 Blinn College-Brenham campus vocational nursing graduates to take the National Council Licensure Examination in 2016 earned passing marks, a requirement for nurses to be licensed to practice.

The perfect pass rate continued a longstanding tradition for the program – over the past six years, 108 of the 109 graduates to take the exam passed on their first attempt. Statewide, approximately 85 percent of students passed last year, while nationwide that figure was approximately 82 percent. Out of 95 vocational nursing programs across the state, Blinn-Brenham was one of 13 to achieve a 100 percent pass rate last year.

“Our students deserve all the credit,” said Michelle Marburger, Program Director. “Their hard work and dedication have made this possible.”

The Blinn-Brenham Vocational Nursing Program provides students the education and training needed to become highly skilled, licensed vocational nurses capable of working in a variety of medical settings.

The program consists of classroom, laboratory and clinical experiences, some of which begin at 6:30 a.m. Hospitals and other health care facilities throughout the Brenham and La Grange communities are utilized for clinical rotations. Students are expected to spend 35-40 hours each week in scheduled, attendance-mandatory activities.

Graduates who pass their state board exams are qualified to work in a variety of settings, including home health, dialysis, hospitals, clinics and physicians’ offices. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for vocational nurses is expected to grow 16 percent between 2014 and 2024, resulting in 117,300 additional positions. In 2015, the median pay for a Texas vocational nurse was $45,130 per year.

Prior to applying to the Vocational Nursing Program, prospective students must attend an online or face-to-face information session. Online information sessions are available Oct. 1, 2016 – Jan. 25, 2017. Face-to-face on-campus sessions will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016; Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016; and Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016. For more information, visit:
