Local talent shines in Blinn-Schulenburg photography contest

Students hailing from Schulenburg, Moulton and Columbus earn top prizes

December 4, 2015

Debbie Koopmann of Columbus, Leroy Krischke of Schulenburg and Mary Day of Moulton Students from the Blinn College-Schulenburg campus put their shutterbug skills on display this semester – first as part of the College’s advanced computer series, then as winners at the inaugural photo contest and show.

Students from the advanced computer class and local 4-H members submitted more than 20 photographs, with public judging taking place at showcases in La Grange, Flatonia and Schulenburg. Mary Day of Moulton placed first in three of the five categories (abstract, animals and landscapes). Debbie Koopmann from Columbus placed first in flora and fauna and had the overall winning photograph, while Leroy Krischke of Schulenburg placed first in portraits. All three winners are students at Blinn.

Koopmann’s grand prize-winning photograph featured a cross as the sun set behind it into the trees.
“This was the first time I had seen this cross made out of railroad ties,” Koopmann said. “I just happened to be there at the right time for the lighting.”

“We just thought it would be a great opportunity to showcase the great work that they were doing,” said Becky Garlick, Schulenburg campus director.

The contest allowed the Schulenburg campus to showcase its many courses and financial aid opportunities. Schulenburg will offer a new digital photography and archive class in March.

Other courses upcoming at Blinn-Schulenburg are the spring computer series and summer advanced computer series, both of which are funded by a grant that allows students to attend free of charge. Blinn-Schulenburg will also have workforce and community education classes like digital works program, stick welding and certified nurse aide classes. The most recent schedule can be seen at www.blinn.edu/workforce.

“We had many interested students who participated and learned more about all the classes that we offer,” Garlick said. “There were several people who knew the college was here but were just unaware of all the opportunities available to them.”

Blinn-Schulenburg offers a variety of academic transfer, workforce training and continuing education classes to fit the needs of any student. For information on course offerings and student registration, visit: www.blinn.edu/schulenburg or call 979-743-5200.
