Blinn names director to establish a regional Texas historical association

Proposed association would promote and facilitate interest in Central Texas history

September 3, 2014

Blinn College has named Dr. Kenneth Howell its director for establishing a regional Texas historical association.

As director, Howell will spearhead efforts to establish a new historical association that will promote and facilitate interest and research in the history of the Central Texas region. The proposed association looks forward to partnering with Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park Association and Star of the Republic Museum administered by Blinn College to encourage Texas history scholarship and education.

“Blinn is especially well-suited to be the sponsoring institution for a major regional historical association because Dr. Howell is one of the leading players in Texas historical scholarship and our history faculty has done so much to study and educate people about Texas history,” said Dr. Diane Lovell, dean of the Division of Social Sciences. “Central Texas has played such an important role in state history that it deserves its own historical association.”

Howell comes to Blinn from Prairie View A&M University, where he has served as associate professor of history since 2010. He served as assistant professor at Prairie View A&M from 2004-2010, and has taught online courses at American Public University since 2012. He has also served as a visiting assistant professor at Texas A&M University and has been a part-time faculty member at the Blinn – Bryan campus since 2001 before moving to a full-time role this Fall.

Howell has edited and written numerous works on Texas history. He earned his Bachelor of Science in history from the University of Texas at Tyler and his Master of Arts in U.S. history from Texas A&M University-Commerce. He earned his Ph.D. in history from Texas A&M University – College Station.
