Blinn to host first fall graduation ceremony at Bryan Civic Auditorium

December 12, 2014

Since 1883, Blinn College has hosted 131 graduation ceremonies. This year it’s doing something a bit different.
Blinn College will host its first fall graduation ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at the Bryan Civic Auditorium located at 800 S. Coulter Dr. In addition to being Blinn’s first fall graduation, it also marks the College’s first graduation ceremony to be held in Bryan.

Blinn will host a reception for graduates and their families at 4:30 p.m. in the Barbara L. Pearson Banquet Room located in the Bryan campus Student Center (map). More than 200 students have applied for graduation this Spring, and approximately 100 are expected to be on hand for commencement.

Two students will speak during the ceremony – Vanessa Martinez, a criminal justice and law enforcement major from Brenham who attends the Brenham campus, and Juan De Lira, a biology major from Ontario, Oregon, attending the Bryan campus.

Martinez looks forward to working as a peace officer following graduation.
“Blinn gave me self-confidence, leadership skills and the power to make a better future for myself, my family and my community,” she said. “Coming to Blinn was one of the best decisions I have made in my life.”

De Lira plans to attend Texas A&M University and earn his Bachelor of Science in nutrition, then go to dental school.
“I found Blinn online and was amazed at its transfer rates,” he said. “I looked into a few different colleges, but Blinn was the only one I called. I spoke to an advisor and that sealed the deal. She was so professional and knowledgeable that I hung up and applied to Blinn.”

Blinn’s academic transfer rate regularly ranks among the best in the state and nation, and is approximately 20 percent higher than the state average. The Blinn TEAM (Transfer Enrollment at A&M) Program allows selected applicants to Texas A&M University’s freshman class a unique co-enrollment opportunity, and the Texas A&M Engineering Academy at Blinn allows students to co-enroll between Blinn and the Dwight Look College of Engineering at Texas A&M. The TEAM Program was recently awarded the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Star Award for exceptional contributions to the state’s higher education plan, Closing the Gaps by 2015.

Blinn has also earned national recognition for affordability. In 2014-15 alone, students who take 30 credit hours will save approximately $4,000 (48.8%) compared to the average Texas public university. Additionally, the College offers 226 endowed scholarships just for Blinn students.

Since 20014, Blinn students have documented more than 372,000 hours of service to the community and the College has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest accolade an educational institution can receive from the federal government for its commitment to service and civic engagement, in five of the last seven years.

Registration is currently open for both the Winter minimester and Spring semester. The Winter minimester runs Dec. 19-23 and Jan. 5-15, and registration is available through Dec. 18. Registration for the 16-week Spring semester is open through Jan. 19, with classes beginning Jan. 20. For enrollment information and to learn about financial aid opportunities, visit: www.blinn.edu.
