Blinn offers Affordable Care Act seminar

Presenter will help small business owners understand and plan for health care reform

Blinn College’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is hosting a seminar to help small business owners understand, plan and prepare for changes caused by the Affordable Care Act.

The seminar will be held from 9-11:30 a.m. June 28 at the Blinn College – Sealy campus Student Center, located at 3701 Outlet Center Drive.

“This seminar gives local business owners the chance to get first-hand professional advice on this very important topic,” said Blinn SBDC Director Matthew Wehring. “This is quite possibly the most significant government regulatory act to affect small businesses since minimum wage was instituted in 1938.”

The Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obamacare, will impact each business differently, depending on the type and number of employees. The seminar will explain the changes small business owners can expect and help them begin planning for the new law, which takes effect on Jan. 1.

Andy Adams, general counsel and vice president for Adams Insurance Service, Inc., will help small business owners understand:

  • which employers are exempt from the employer mandate.
  • how full-time employees are defined.
  • how independent contractors, temporary workers and seasonal workers are treated under the ACA.
  • how to determine the 50-employee threshold.
  • who is eligible for the temporary small business tax credit.

Participants who register online at receive a discounted $20 rate.
The SBDC at Blinn College is a business consulting and training center that is part of the University of Houston Small Business Development Center Network, which serves 32 counties in Southeast Texas. The center provides free one-on-one consulting and low-cost training seminars.
