Weeklong program provides hands-on instruction in math, science, technology and leadership
The Blinn College – Schulenburg campus delivered oceans of fun at this year’s Kids’ College.
Thirty-five students in grades 4-8 participated in the annual educational extravaganza hosted by Blinn College and the SWIFT (Schulenburg Weimar In Focus Together) AmeriCorps. The weeklong program treated students to a fun week of educational programming with the theme “Oceans of Fun.”
The program taught math, science, technology and leadership through hands-on activities. Students built model habitable structures for the ocean floor using index cards and staples, then tested the structures to ensure they were capable of supporting the weight of a 5-pound brick.
Students learned how sea turtles and other animals navigate the ocean depths with the aid of geomagnetic forces, studied hurricane tracking and meteorology and designed their own rain makers from paper towel tubes. Each student also created a message in a bottle listing their goals for the future.
Blinn College and SWIFT AmeriCorps partnered to host the annual program, which provides a fun, hands-on summer learning environment. SWIFT is a community-based non-profit organization improving the quality of life in the community by providing educational assistance and working with youths.
Blinn – Schulenburg offers a variety of academic transfer, workforce training and continuing education classes to fit the needs of any student. For information on course offerings and student registration, visit: www.blinn.edu/schulenburg or call 979-743-5200.
