Blinn opens theatre season with Tony Award-winning 'Red'

Drama provides startling snapshot of a brilliant artist at the height of his fame

RedThe Blinn College – Brenham campus Theatre Arts Program kicks off its 2013-14 season with a Tony Award-winning play that vividly portrays an artist’s ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work of art.

Set in the 1950s, “Red” paints the picture of master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko, who has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his studio on the Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing.

“Red” is a startling snapshot of a brilliant artist at the height of his fame, a raw and provocative play hailed as “intense and exciting” by The New York Times.

“Red” will serve as Blinn’s 2013 Theatre Faculty Showcase, with Technical Theatre Director Kevin Patrick playing the role of Rothko, Theatre Instructor Jennifer Patrick serving as costume designer and Theatre Arts Director Bradley Nies serving as director.

Aaron Cravens, a sophomore from Crockett, plays Ken and serves as the production’s master carpenter. Jericka Gaskamp, a sophomore from Brenham, is stage manager; Christian Daigle, a sophomore from Hempstead, is assistant stage manager and sound coordinator; Colleen Dougan, a sophomore from Brenham, is in charge of props; Zachary Yoke, a sophomore from Leander, is the lighting designer; Nora Hunt, a sophomore from Sugar Land, is the light board operator; and Karen Rush, a sophomore from Houston, manages the front of house.

Performances will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 5-7 and at 2 p.m. Sept. 8 in the Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center (map). Special high school preview performances will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 5 and 6. To purchase tickets or get more information, call the O’Donnell Center Box Office at 979-830-4024 or email
