All-Region infielder Sara Vaughn received the 2011 Dr. James H. Atkinson Cup as the sophomore student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average at Blinn College. Vaughn, a business major, finished her career at Blinn with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Vaughn, a sophomore from Huntsville, earned both First Team All-Conference honors and Second Team All-Region honors for the Buccaneers in 2010. This year, Vaughn helped lead the team to a 51-6 record and a third consecutive Region XIV title. In March, she was named most valuable player of the NFCA Junior College Leadoff Classic by going 12-for-19 over six games, including two doubles and two home runs.
Vaughn now looks to lead the Buccaneers to the program’s first national championship, as they travel to the national tournament in St. George, UT, May 19-21. It will mark the Bucs’ third consecutive trip to the national tournament and fifth overall appearance. In 2010, Blinn finished fourth in the nation with a 45-11 record and No. 10 final ranking.
The Atkinson Cup, sponsored by the Buccaneer Alumni Letterman Association, began in 2000 to honor the top sophomore student athlete with the highest GPA in a minimum of 48 transferable hours. The award is named for former Blinn athletic director and president, the late Dr. James H. Atkinson.
