Richard Speas, director of athletics at Western Texas College (WTC) since 2008, has been named the new athletic director at Blinn College.
Prior to serving as WTC’s athletic director, the Union, Iowa, native served as the director of athletics at Peru State College in Nebraska from 2006-2008. During a nine year stint at William Penn University (Iowa) from 1997-2006, he served in various capacities, including the assistant athletic director for compliance and game management, assistant director of admissions, instructor, head men’s and women’s cross-country coach, head men’s and women’s track and field coach and head assistant baseball coach. Speas also served as the athletic director and head baseball and softball at Southern Virginia University from 1995-1997.
During his short time at WTC, Speas managed an athletic department that claimed a national championship in men’s rodeo (2009) and top-10 finishes in women’s rodeo (2009) and women’s golf (2010, 2009). In addition to this success, the WTC athletic program has been recognized for its accomplishments in the classroom, highlighted by the men’s cross-country team being named NJCAA Academic National Champions in 2007 and 2008. WTC’s 2010 women’s basketball team was recognized for having the 10th highest team GPA in the nation by the National Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
Speas holds a master’s degree in sports administration from Truman State University (Mo.) and a bachelor’s degree from William Penn University.
Speas will start his new position March 21. He is married to Karma Speas and they have seven children.
