Blinn College will hold commencement for graduates from all four campuses on May 13 at 8 p.m. at Spencer Stadium on the Brenham campus. This year there are nearly 500 candidates receiving one-year certificates or two-year diplomas for degrees, including associate in arts, associate in science, and associate in applied science.
This occasion marks Blinn’s 128th commencement. The college holds the ceremony once yearly for graduates of the previous summer and fall semesters as well as the current spring semester. In case of rain, the ceremonies will be moved to the Brenham High School Auditorium.
Brazos Valley attorney Daniel M.L. Hernandez will deliver the commencement address.
Hernandez, a Bryan native, graduated from Texas A&M University in 1998 before receiving his law degree from Syracuse University in 2001. A member of the State Bar of Texas, he served in house counsel at SBC Southwestern Bell, L.P.’s Litigation Group in Dallas before founding the Hernandez Law Firm, P.C., where he currently serves as Partner. Throughout his legal career, he has represented various corporate clients in legal matters including civil rights, employment law/arbitrations, commercial litigation, tort litigation, collections and telecommunication issues dealing with the Public Utilities Commission.
The recipients of the Blinn College Professional Associations’ Teaching Excellence Awards for the Brenham and Bryan campuses will be presented by Academic Affairs Vice President Dr. Debra LaCour. Mr. Attwood Kenjura, Blinn College Board of Trustees chairman, will present the candidates to receive their diplomas. Registrar Julie Maass will announce the graduates.
The student message will be delivered by Kaci Sowers Hayre, a graduating dental hygiene student on the Bryan campus. Hayre is a Brenham native who attended Brenham Christian Academy (class of ’06) while taking dual credit courses from Blinn College. The former vice president of Blinn’s student chapter of the American Dental Hygienists Association plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene upon graduation. Throughout her time at Blinn, Kaci was heavily involved in service learning projects, including Give Kids a Smile, which just this year paired more than 80 area children with free preventative dental care and an "adoptive" dentist. To date, the project has provided almost $40,000 of preventive dental care to underserved families in the Brazos Valley.
The Blinn College Band under the director of Harry D. Blake will present a concert prior to the graduation ceremony and will perform the processional and recessional. The Blinn Women’s College Choir will perform the National Anthem under the direction of Jennifer Wise. Father David Konderla, director of ministry and pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Center in College Station, will deliver the invocation and benediction.
