April 5, 2011
The Blinn College Vocal Department on the Brenham campus is celebrating spring with the sweet notes of singing in three upcoming concerts. First up, the Blinn College Camerata Choir presents a spring concert April 18 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, located at Airline Drive and Hillcrest Drive in Brenham. The Camerata Choir is a mixed chorus with a repertoire that is varied each semester and includes sacred and secular works. Students audition for the choir with the opportunity to also audition for the All-State Choir.
Also in April, students in the musical theater ensemble classes on the Brenham campus will sing for their grade. The Troupe, as they are called, will perform their “Final Act” April 28 and 29 at the Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center in hopes of securing a good grade for the semester. Instructor Jennifer Wise calls it an eclectic mix of music and theater. The chorus begins at 8 p.m. each night.
Ending the spring semester, the Blinn choir will join with the Brenham Chorale to present “An American Celebration” concert May 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Unity Theatre, located at Commerce Street and Church Street in Brenham. The Chorale is a community-based choir of local singers who enroll in a course through the Blinn College Office of Workforce Education. Each season the group collaborates with the student Blinn Choral Union to perform works for the public
Admissions to all three spring concerts are free.
The Blinn choral program is under the direction of Jennifer Wise, assisted by Elizabeth Shipsey. The program is made up of four choirs – Camerata Chamber Choir, Musical Theater Ensemble, Choral Union and the Women’s Chorus – and involves more than 35 students each semester that perform regularly thorough the semester.
