Blinn College wins 104th National Western Stock Show Junior College Judging Contest

Blinn Livestock Judging TeamThe Blinn College livestock judging team was victorious over 26 other junior college teams to win the 104th National Western Stock Show.  The National Western, held in Denver on Jan. 17, is one of six national contests declared by the National Junior College Coaches Association.

The team earned the top spot with a score of 4729 points by finishing first in sheep and goat judging, first in cattle judging, first in oral reasons, and fourth in swine judging.

High individual contestants for Blinn were: Meg Drake of Winfield, KS, who won first overall, first in sheep and goats, first in cattle, and fifth in reasons; Brady Ragland of Lubbock, who came in sixth overall, first in swine, and fourth in reasons; Cody Marburger of Round Top, who was eighth in reasons, and tenth in sheep and goats; Clay Morrison of Midland, who was third in sheep and goats; Kody Lucherk of Poth, Trey Geiger of Lytle, and Jenna Day of Howe are also team members. The team is coached by Brant Poe and assisted by Scott Shelby, Caleb Harang and Brice Mund.

“The National Western’s tradition is second to none. I am so proud of the determination and drive that the team put forth to accomplish this win,” Poe said. “When you speak about Livestock Expositions, the National Western ranks at the top of the list as far as quality livestock and prestige. It is truly an honor for Blinn to bring these champion honors back to Brenham, Texas.”

The team now takes that momentum into the Southwestern Exposition in Fort Worth on Feb. 7.

The livestock judging team is a scholarship program in the division of agriculture and applied technology at Blinn. Doug Pierce is division chairman.
