National Champion volleyball player wins Atkinson Cup at Blinn College
Kara Stinson has a national championship volleyball ring to show for her effort on the court and now she has a trophy as the top student athlete at Blinn College. Stinson received the 2009 Dr. James H. Atkinson Cup as the sophomore student athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average.
Stinson had a perfect 4.0 GPA in her four semesters at Blinn. The business major and graduate of Nederland High School is the daughter of James and Libbie Stinson. The outside hitter and defensive specialist was a member of the Lady Bucs team that lost only two matches in 2008 and won the national title.
The Atkinson Cup, sponsored by the Buccaneer Alumni Letterman Association, began in 2000 to honor the top sophomore student athlete with the highest GPA in a minimum of 48 transferable hours. The award is named for former Blinn athletic director and president, the late Dr. James H. Atkinson.
Kara Stinson receives her Atkinson Cup trophy from Blinn College cheer and dance director Karry Forsythe prior to graduation ceremonies on May 15. Shown from left to right are Blinn College president and CEO, Dr. Daniel J. Holt, Stinson, Forsythe (holding the permanent trophy), and former Blinn athletic director Don Wilhelm.
