Blinn Engineering Summer Camp

The 2018 Blinn Smart Home Engineering Project Build will offer students ages 14-17 the experience to engage in groups in the engineering design process by designing and building model homes and equipping these homes with the latest automation technology.  Students will have the opportunity to utilize creativity in design as well as teamwork skills to complete the group project within the 6-day, 5-night camp.  The camp will be led by two Blinn engineering faculty who will serve as primary instructors and four current college engineering students who will serve as teaching assistants and camp counselors.  Students will engage in formal instruction with tailored curriculum daily from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.  In the evening hours, students will have to opportunity to participate in recreational activities led by Blinn’s Student Leadership and Activities office.  Students will also spend an afternoon touring a local international engineering and research company, REM Surface Engineering.

Throughout the week, students will be striving to achieve the ultimate goal of completing a model home with installed automation systems designed by the groups.  On the final day of the camp, students will present their models in a formal presentation and ceremony.  Participant’s families and Blinn staff will be invited to attend this ceremony to conclude the camp.  Students will also be given a retrospective post to self-evaluate their learning during the camp.  The instructors will also be awarding high-ranking group projects, with top group members each receiving $500 Blinn scholarships.

By the conclusion of the camp, all participants will have been exposed to and engaged in these areas of engineering: architectural, civil, computer, electrical, manufacturing, and mechanical engineering.
