Electrical Technician FAQs

Electrical technicians connect, repair, or replace wiring. They service equipment or fixtures and assemble, install, test, or maintain electrical wiring, equipment, and appliances. They also check circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures and use power tools and testing devices, such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, or oscilloscopes, to ensure safety and compatibility of parts.

Electrical technicians often plan the layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures based on job specifications and local codes, as well as conducting inspections of electrical systems, equipment and components. They frequently troubleshoot failures and use trade mathematics.

Electrical technicians are employed in a wide variety of industries, including construction, commercial, residential, or self-employed. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national demand for electricians will increase 14 percent between 2014 and 2024, creating almost 86,000 new jobs. According to data supplied by Workforce Solutions Brazos Valley, local demand for electricians is expected to be nearly identical, creating an average of 20 position openings each year with a mean hourly wage approaching $20 per hour.

Blinn’s Electrical Technician Program includes 200 hours of classroom instruction. Graduates who successfully complete the program are qualified to enter the field as an apprentice. Blinn’s Electrical Apprenticeship Program features four levels of instruction with approximately 2,000 hours of on-the-job training and 144 hours of classroom training each year.

The Blinn College Electrical Pre-Apprenticeship Boot Camp is an introduction into the electrical trade for entry-level students who wish to explore the career field of Electrical Technician. This 144-hour program will offer fundamental skills and knowledge in the electrical trade, allowing students secure employment shortly after completion. The classes will consist of lecture, hands-on and assessments.
