Chancellor of Blinn College

October 2017 Update

Dear faculty and staff,

As November approaches and the Blinn College District enters the second half of the Fall semester, we continue to focus on meeting the needs of Blinn’s current and future students. To that end, the Board of Trustees discussed a variety of potential capital improvement projects during its regular meeting on October 17th.

In 2015 and 2016, the Blinn College District received $48.6 million in revenue bonds, of which $44.1 million have been spent or allocated at the RELLIS or Bryan campuses. At the October board meeting, College administrators presented the board with three potential projects that may be funded with the remaining funds, including renovations at the Brenham Campus Moody Library and Student Center, and a 6,000-square-foot expansion to the W.J. “Bill” Rankin Agricultural Complex. Additional details regarding these items are available in the College’s press release.

These projects would help to recruit students to Brenham, and help Blinn meet its unofficial goal of increasing Brenham Campus enrollment to 5,000 students – doubling its current figure and financially strengthening that campus.
As we discussed at Faculty Convocation, enrollment growth remains one of the College’s top priorities, both this year and in the years to come. With a relatively small tax base and declining state funding, Blinn relies upon student enrollment to fund its programs. As the competition for community college enrollment increases, Blinn remains proactive in creating facilities that will maintain its competitive advantage, including its current development projects at the RELLIS Campus, the Brenham Campus student housing facility, and the Kruse Center. The projects proposed during the recent board meeting would continue that trend.

In regards to the construction projects currently in development, progress at the RELLIS Campus continues to proceed quickly with an eye toward its grand opening on August 23, 2018. At this time, exterior walls and windows are being installed on Blinn’s RELLIS Campus academic facility, and contractors currently are running pipes, electrical wiring, and conduits on the interior of the building. Later this month, Blinn’s academic deans will present their recommendations for the programs to be offered at RELLIS to Executive Council, allowing the College to prepare course offerings at RELLIS for the Fall Semester.

At the Brenham Campus student housing facility currently in development, framing on the north walls has reached the fourth floor, and roof framing will begin shortly. Once the roof is framed, the contractor will dry-in that portion of the facility to allow interior work to begin.

At the Kruse Center, the interior work nears completion, and the building is scheduled to be deemed “substantially complete” on November 7. Vendors then will begin installing fixtures, furnishings, and equipment in advance of the facility’s grand opening ceremony at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 1st. If your schedule allows, I invite you to join us for this exciting event, as we welcome a facility that will add vibrancy to our campus culture, and help Blinn recruit and retain students.

On Saturday, December 2nd, the Buccaneer men’s and women’s basketball teams will host the first games at the Kruse Center with a double-header beginning at 2:00 p.m.

As we look ahead to future events, I also would ask that you mark your calendars for the holiday receptions taking place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 12th, on the Brenham Campus, and Wednesday, December 13th, on the Bryan Campus. The Fall commencement ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 13th, at the Bryan Performing Arts Center.

Thank you for your hard work as we continue to emphasize student success in all that we do.
